One Duo

Dmitrii Treu (1982) lives and works in Belgium.

His multidisciplinary works are often inspired by pop culture, (art) history, anthropology and everyday life. He picked up graffiti in 1997 and studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. In 2008 he moved to Belgium to study with the city sculptors of Ghent. Under their influence he became more interested in art history and craftsmanship. Resulting in another study restoration.

This conjunction led to the One Duo project. Simular to a 1980’s hip hop DJ, One Duo mixes pop culture elements with older aspects of an ancient, artistic tradition. Creatinga new meaning for iconic and historical images. -A method that refers to the internet meme culture.
His works are also motivated by the need for social change. And carry the same fighting spirit like the works of Ai Weiwei, Jimmie Durham, Norton Maza and Banksy.
The extremely direct and distinct appearance of the works come from graffiti culture – which ofcourse has always been a form of resistance – and in which, originally, the pieces were plain and clear. Yet there is always more to the picture than meets the eye.
